Water around the heater
Leaking water heater help in Cathedral City
Not every wet spot means a failed tank. Condensation, a drip from a fitting above, relief-valve discharge and a true tank leak can look alike. Observe safely, describe what you see, and let the assessment decide.

What to observe — from where you stand
- Where the water is: top, side fittings, the drain pan, the floor, or a pipe leading away
- Whether it's a damp film, a slow drip, or water that keeps spreading
- Whether the area dries out between uses
- Whether you still have hot water
Take a wide photo and a closer one from a safe distance. If water is near outlets, cords or wiring, keep out of it.
What not to do
- Don't remove access covers or touch wiring
- Don't cap, plug or redirect the relief discharge pipe
- Don't relight a gas burner or drain the tank
If water keeps spreading and the cold-water shutoff above the heater is reachable without touching wiring or standing in water, closing it can limit damage. Otherwise keep clear and get in touch once you're safe.
How to describe it
"Water in the pan, no drips I can see from above, started Tuesday, still have hot water" is far more useful than "it's leaking." Add the heater's label details and where it sits.
If you smell gas
Leave the area right away. Don't use light switches, flames or devices that might spark. Once you're somewhere safe, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200, or 911 if there is immediate danger or you can't reach the utility. Spreading water near wiring: keep clear and call for help from a safe place. (Guidance based on SoCalGas safety information.)
